Civilization is difficult to define since we are surrounded by it all the time. It is difficult to see something which is very much a part of us. In a sense it is a characteristic of the human race and distinguishes it from animals. There has been an attempt to study various civilizations, their rise, spread and decline. There have also been many attempts to reconstruct an original uncivilized state of man and the beginnings of civiliztion. For some time it was believed that civilization had something to do with cuties. But it is now clear that many tribes that lived outside of cities had well-developed languages, literatures, religions, arts and crafts. They had all the marks of civilization and culture.

He performed not only the old Hindu religious rites, but also practised a broad-minded toleration. A Musalman holy man was as respectable to his as a Brahmin. He would cause no harm to any holy building of Islam. He could punish severely, but he was not by nature either cruel or bloodthirsty. Towards woman he displayed a gentle treatment. The spiritual lessons which he had learned from his mother were strengthened by his famous Guru, Ramdas.
